Reena Saini Kallat’s multidisciplinary practice explores borders, memory, migration, and ecological interdependence through works that connect personal histories with broader social and environmental questions. Thresholds: Requiem (The Last Call) (2026) reimagines twentieth-century acoustic locators, once designed to detect distant aircraft, as vessels for the calls of extinct and critically endangered bird species. Situated within Al Qattara Oasis, part of Al Ain’s UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, the installation transforms a surveillance device into an act of listening, reflecting on ecological memory, loss, and our shared responsibility to care for the environments we call home. The work evokes the fragile threshold between survival and extinction, recalling what has already been lost while drawing attention to lives that may yet be protected.

Reena Saini Kallat's practice spans drawing, sculpture, photography, video, and installation, exploring ideas of memory, migration, borders, and belonging. Through recurring materials such as electric cables and rubber stamps, she examines how histories are remembered, erased, and transformed, revealing overlooked narratives that question systems shaping identity and movement. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Tate Modern, London, and at the Havana (2024, 2019), Sharjah (2023), and Busan (2016) biennials, the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2011), and the Asian Art Biennial, Taiwan (2009). Her work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Museum Arnhem; Cincinnati Art Museum; Sharjah Art Foundation; and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
