Jean-Marie Appriou’s practice explores myth, nature, and transformation through dreamlike worlds where the past and future coexist. Horizons (2023) takes the form of a monumental aluminium vessel carrying two astronauts, its heavy metal appearing almost weightless, suspended between antiquity and the future. Inspired by the ancient Egyptian solar boats that carried the sun god Re across the sky and accompanied the dead into the afterlife, the sculpture reimagines navigation as a symbol of passage, discovery, and transformation. Situated in Abu Dhabi, a city shaped by centuries of maritime exchange, the work draws a parallel between ancient seafaring and contemporary space exploration, suggesting that both are driven by humanity’s enduring search for knowledge, transformation, and new horizons.

Paris, France
Jean-Marie Appriou is a sculptor whose practice explores myth, nature, and transformation through fantastical worlds inhabited by human, animal, and vegetal figures. Working across aluminium, bronze, glass, clay, and wax, he draws on folklore, ancient mythologies, and science fiction to create dreamlike sculptures where the past and future coexist. His recurring figures and bestiary explore metamorphosis, ecological balance, and the movement between different states of being. Monumental in scale yet intimate in presence, his works retain the visible traces of the artist’s hand. His work has been exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Palais de Tokyo, Musée du Louvre, and Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou in Paris; TANK Shanghai; and Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Public projects include Central Park, New York; Château de Versailles; and Forever Is Now at the Pyramids of Giza.
